[Fiction] 1984

Prompt: 1984. You’re locked in a room with your greatest fear. Describe what’s in the room. (365 Days of Writing Prompts Copyright © 2013 by The Daily Post.)

In the dusk, in this bardo between consciousness and oblivion, the trembling prisoner no longer longs for the light.

She no longer sees the eyeballs rolling and jumping in front of her, eyeballs that once had life and hope for a better world, and lost them.

She no longer hears the distant, tortured cries of her family, the shrill screams that cut through the air and draw daggers into her heart.

She no longer smells the odour exuded by the dead body of her lover.

She no longer tastes the bitterness left by her last kiss.

She no longer fears, or hopes.

She’s broken, in the dusk.
