Prompt: Moment of kindness. Describe a moment of kindness, between you and someone else – loved one or complete stranger.
Spring Festival, like Christmas, always beams of family union, wonderful food, and the joy of looking forward to a new year of hopes and dreams. One of the best parts was the receiving of red packets with money inside – I, like many children, would sleep with the packets under my pillow, for the good luck they’d bring.
So, after a night of staying up, playing fireworks and celebrating, the figure of an old cleaner seemed particularly unbefitting for the first day of the lunar new year.
We were driving to grandma’s house when we saw him. ‘Not an easy job,’ my father said, ‘can’t even stay at home for the festival.’
I don’t remember who brought up the idea of giving him a red packet, but I was the one to deliver it.
What I do remember is the smile on the wrinkled face, and the ‘thank you’s that he kept repeating.
What a nice feeling that was, to make someone’s day, in a moment of kindness.
